On a whim, we decided to do an informal virtual contest at the beginning of 2020 we affectionately name #hashporn. Since the judging would be based on photo presentations alone, we openly acknowledged the evaluation would be very biased and subjective. As Frenchy noted, “This will be a beauty contest, not a quality contest.” Although to a degree, these two things go hand-in-hand when it comes to concentrates.
For initial #hashporn1 contest we received 33 photographs of traditional hashish and rosin temple balls. There were 3 winners - People’s Choice, Madame Cannoli’s Choice, and Frenchy Cannoli’s Choice. The winners were gifted a dab tool set custom-made by Happy Daddy Products for Frenchy.
The response was so overwhelmingly positive that a few weeks later at the end of February 2020, we did it again. For #hashporn2 we added a little twist - collaboration. We wanted to celebrate the farmers and breeders behind the material that allowed the hash-maker to make their magic. We had 80 entries, and the introduction of a hash sculpture that pretty much stole the show, the croissant by @bontanichemist.
The greatest reward of #hashporn3, held in Nov. 2020, was discovering amazing hash-makers from all over the world. We received entries from London, and Uruguay, South Africa and Canada. And of course, the U.S. was well-represented, disproportionately even, since cannabis cultivation and consumption was now legal for either medical or adult-use in 15 states and counting, vastly reducing the risk of showing your work publicly for all to enjoy.
The contest allowed these artisans exposure to a cannabis community that was ecstatic to celebrate their efforts. People around the world were able to connect. It was fabulous. Over 9 days, 132 entries were chosen from all the submissions, making the judging a real challenge. A popular theme was the anthocyanins-rich, purple-hued entries.
#hashporn3 was made up of three categories with three judges by category - Frenchy, Madame Cannoli, and the People’s Choice (highest votes in the category)
